Male and female rivets also called two‑piece rivets, mating rivets, or opposed rivets, these fasteners consist of two separate components: a solid rivet (male) and a semi‑hollow rivet (female). The solid rivet is inserted from one side of the assembly, the semi‑hollow rivet slides over its protruding shank from the other side, and both are set simultaneously with a press or hammer. The solid shank upsets inside the hollow cavity, forming a permanent, secure joint with flush or domed heads on both faces.

Two Components, One Perfect Joint – How they Work

Unlike a standard solid rivet that deforms on one side to form a clinch, or a blind rivet that relies on a breakstem, they work as a matched pair. The male component is a solid rivet with a pre‑formed head on one end. The female component is a semi‑hollow rivet with a pre‑formed head on one end and a shallow cavity on the other.


During installation, the male solid rivet passes through the hole from one side, and the female semi‑hollow rivet is placed over the protruding tail from the opposite side. When a press or hammer applies force to both heads simultaneously, the solid shank upsets into the hollow cavity. The result is a permanent joint with a clean, factory‑formed head on both sides—no exposed clinch, no sharp edges, no unfinished surfaces.

One Real Application – Garden Fence Gate Hardware

A manufacturer of residential garden fencing and gates was installing decorative metal fences with wood or metal gate posts. The gate hinges and latches needed to be securely attached to the posts while maintaining a clean, finished appearance on both the outside and inside of the gate. The solid male rivet was inserted from the outside of the gate, and the semi‑hollow female rivet was placed over the protruding tail from the inside. A press set both heads simultaneously, creating a clean, domed finish on both faces with no exposed clinch. The zinc plating provided corrosion resistance for outdoor use.

How We Make Them – Two Parts, One Perfect Match

Male and female rivets are manufactured using two different processes to create the solid and semi‑hollow components that work together as a matched set.


The male component (solid rivet) is produced through cold heading – wire is cut to length, squared, and formed with a pre‑finished head (round or flat). The shank remains solid.


The female component (semi‑hollow rivet) is also produced through cold heading, but with an additional piercing operation that creates a shallow cavity at the tail end. The cavity is sized to accept the shank of the male solid rivet during installation.


The critical factor is consistency. The diameter of the male solid shank and the inner diameter of the female cavity must have a precise fit. Too tight, and the female rivet will not slide onto the male shank. Too loose, and the upsetting of the shank will not fill the cavity fully, resulting in a weak joint.


We produce both components in matched batches and package them together in the correct ratios for your order. Before packaging, we perform frequent test fits – randomly sampling them from the batch and assembling them to check for smooth fit and a clean, secure upset.

One Rivet Pair, Eight Checks – How We Ensure Quality

Every batch of our rivets passes through eight quality gates:

Raw material diameter check – Incoming wire measured with laser micrometer (±0.02mm).


Raw material composition check – Spectrometer verifies material grade.


First article appearance check – First 10 male solid rivets and 10 female semi‑hollow rivets inspected under magnification for cracks or defects.


First article dimensional check – Male shank diameter, female cavity inner diameter, head diameter, and overall length verified on optical comparator.


In‑process checks – 5 male and 5 female rivets every 500 pieces. Any drift stops the press.


Test fit (assembly check) – Every 2,000 pieces, we assemble 3 matched pairs into a sample of your actual material. We check that the female rivet slides cleanly onto the male shank and that the upset fills the cavity tightly.
