Real Application – Outdoor Folding Chair Frame

A manufacturer of outdoor folding chairs was using semi‑tubular rivets for the scissor‑hinge joints. Why the Round Head Has Survived for Centuries – And How We Make It Right

The round head is not a design accident. It has been used for over a century because it solves three problems at once: it distributes load evenly, it resists impact without deformation, and it looks finished without extra finishing work.


Getting it right means controlling three things:


The dome shape – Too flat, and it looks wrong. Too tall, and it catches on everything. Our heading dies are cut to a specific crown radius that matches the classic round head profile. Every rivet gets the same radius.


The concentricity – The head must be centred on the shank. If it is off by more than 0.10mm, the rivet looks lopsided and may not seat properly in your hole. We check this on every batch.


The surface – No tool marks, no scratches, no die transfer. Our carbide dies are polished to a mirror finish. A mark on the die means a mark on every rivet. We do not let that happen.


The result: round heads that look identical from the first piece to the millionth. Same dome. Same height. Same finish.

Q1: When should I choose a round head rivet over a flat head or truss head?


A: Choose round head when you want maximum head strength, a classic visible appearance, and the joint does not have clearance constraints. Round heads are taller (2.5–3.5mm for a 5mm shank) and more prominent than flat heads – but they also offer the best impact resistance. If your assembly has sliding parts or tight clearances, choose flat head. If you need extra wide bearing for soft materials, choose truss head. For general‑purpose assemblies where appearance and strength both matter, round head is the standard.


Q2: Which design should I choose – solid, semi‑tubular, or full tubular?


A: Semi‑tubular is the default choice for most applications – 80–90% of solid strength at 25–30% of the setting force. Choose solid when you need maximum strength for structural, load‑bearing assemblies (like the outdoor chair case above). Choose full tubular when you are working with soft materials or need minimal setting force. All three designs are available with the same round head profile.
