Choose flat head when: You need a low profile but do not want the extra cost and step of countersinking. The rivet will be visible and appearance matters. You need a wide bearing surface to distribute load. Clearance is limited.

Choose solid for structural joints where maximum strength is required. Choose semi‑tubular for high‑volume production, thin materials, and faster assembly lines. Semi‑tubular rivets only swell at the tail, making them ideal for installation along pivot points and assemblies where the surrounding material must not be damaged.




One Real Application – Industrial Control Panel Enclosure

A manufacturer of industrial control panels needed a fastener for mounting components inside metal enclosures. The panels had to stack flush against each other – any protruding head would cause gaps and scratching during assembly. Countersinking was not feasible due to the thin panel material. The customer needed a low‑profile fastener that would hold securely under vibration.


We supplied zinc‑plated steel flat head semi‑tubular rivets – 4.0mm shank, 8.0mm head, 10.0mm barrel length. The flat head sat only 0.9mm above the panel surface – low enough to clear the mating panels. The semi‑tubular cavity cut setting force from 3.5 tons to 1.0 ton – no deformation of the thin panels. The zinc plating provided corrosion protection for the industrial environment. The customer tested 1,000 rivets across 500 panels. After 100,000 vibration cycles, zero loosening. They now order steel flat head rivets in batches of 300,000 pieces annually.

A: Yes, but with a distinction between solid and semi‑tubular designs. A solid steel flat head rivet delivers maximum shear and tensile strength and is widely used in structural assemblies, bridges, and heavy machinery. A semi‑tubular flat head rivet retains 80–90% of solid rivet strength – which is more than enough for most industrial equipment, machinery guards, and furniture applications. If your application is structural and carries significant load, choose solid. If it is an assembly line application with moderate loads, semi‑tubular will give you the strength you need with faster installation. For the control panel case above, semi‑tubular provided more than enough strength for the application.


Q: "What is the maximum shank diameter you can produce for steel flat head rivets – and what is the longest length?"


A: Our 45 cold‑heading machines can produce rivets up to 10mm in shank diameter and 100mm in overall length for solid designs. For semi‑tubular designs, the maximum length is typically limited by the cavity depth – we can produce barrel lengths up to 80mm depending on the diameter. For diameters above 10mm or lengths above 100mm, we can discuss custom tooling and alternative manufacturing methods.
