Steel Round Head Rivets

Steel Round Head Rivets

Nuote Metals manufactures and sells steel round head rivets in a variety of finishes, including zinc plating, nickel plating, and Dacromet plating. Round head rivets feature a semicircular head shape, offering excellent tensile and shear strength, capable of withstanding heavy loads. The round head design allows the rivet to better conform to the connecting component during connection, improving joint stability and sealing.

Product Description

Steel round head rivets keep that classic appearance and add the strength and cost‑effectiveness of steel. They are used in structural frames, heavy equipment, automotive assemblies, bridges, and anywhere you want a fastener that looks traditional and holds permanently.

Available in both solid and semi‑tubular designs, you can choose the version that matches your strength requirements and production speed.

Round Head vs. Flat Head – The Classic Choice

Feature Steel Round Head Rivet Steel Flat Head Rivet
Head protrusion (5mm shank) 2.5 – 3.5mm 0.8 – 1.2mm
Head diameter / shank ratio 1.6 – 1.8 : 1 2.0 – 2.5 : 1
Head strength Maximum Good
Impact resistance Excellent Moderate
Appearance Classic, prominent, traditional Low, neat, finished
Best for Visible assemblies, structural joints, impact resistance Clearance‑limited, sliding surfaces

Choose round head when: The rivet will be visible and you want a classic, professional appearance. You need maximum head strength and impact resistance. Clearance is not a constraint. You want a traditional, industrial look that signals durability.

Solid vs. Semi‑Tubular – Which Design Do You Need?

Feature Steel Round Head Solid Rivet Steel Round Head Semi‑Tubular Rivet
Tail design Fully solid Partially hollow (45–55% of length)
Setting force 100% 25–30% of solid
Shear strength Maximum (100%) 80–90% of solid
Installation speed Slower, heavy press Fast, automated
Best for Structural, maximum strength, high‑load High‑volume, thin materials, fast assembly

Choose solid for structural joints where maximum strength is required. Choose semi‑tubular for high‑volume production, thin materials, and faster assembly lines. The round head looks the same whether it is solid or semi‑tubular – the difference is what you do not see.

One Real Application – Agricultural Equipment Chassis

A manufacturer of agricultural sprayers and harvesters needed a fastener for chassis frame assemblies. The frames carried heavy loads and were subject to continuous vibration from the engine and uneven terrain. The previous semi‑tubular rivets loosened over time. The customer needed a permanent, high‑strength fastener that would not loosen under vibration – and they needed it at a competitive price for high‑volume production.

We supplied zinc‑plated steel round head solid rivets – 6.0mm shank, 10.5mm head, 20.0mm overall length. The solid construction provided permanent clamping force that would not loosen under vibration. The round head delivered the classic, consistent appearance the customer wanted for their equipment. The zinc plating provided corrosion protection for agricultural conditions. The customer tested 500 rivets across 50 sprayers. After 2,000 hours of field operation, zero loosening, zero failures. They now order steel round head rivets in batches of 400,000 pieces annually.

Materials and Finishes – What We Offer

Material: Low‑carbon steel (1008 / Q195 / SPCC). Tensile strength: 400–500 MPa. Low‑carbon steel offers excellent formability and the highest strength‑to‑cost ratio of any rivet material.

Available finishes:

Finish Appearance Corrosion Protection Best For
Plain (uncoated) Raw steel None Indoor, dry environments
Zinc‑plated (clear) Silver 48 hrs salt spray Indoor general use
Zinc‑plated (yellow) Gold tint 96 hrs salt spray Sheltered outdoor
Nickel‑plated Bright silver 96 hrs salt spray Consumer products, visible hardware
Black oxide Matte black 24 hrs salt spray Anti‑glare, industrial

If your application is continuously wet or in a coastal environment, we recommend switching to stainless steel round head rivets. For everything else, steel with the right finish works.

CNC turning parts – precision components with tolerances down to ±0.005mm

What we hold:

Tolerances – ±0.05mm on standard rivet dimensions

Stock – over 3,000 different sizes, from 0.8mm to 10mm shank diameter

Lead time – 3–5 days for stocked sizes; 15–25 days for custom orders

Quality – 100% inspected before shipment

Certification – ISO 9001:2015

We ship to manufacturers across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond.

Why Customers Choose Us – Real Feedback and Quality You Can Trust

Manufacturers who use our steel round head rivets come back to us for consistent quality and reliable delivery. Here is what they tell us:

“We have been using their solid round head rivets for three years. The head geometry is consistent – no lopsided domes, no off‑centre heads.” – Agricultural equipment manufacturer

“We tested six suppliers for our new chassis assembly. Their rivets were the only ones that passed our 2,000‑hour vibration test.” – Heavy machinery builder

“Their documentation is complete – material certs, dimensional reports, everything we need.” – Automotive supplier

What gives them confidence:

We check every batch – Not just random samples. Our in‑house inspection lab is equipped with: laser micrometers (±0.02mm accuracy), optical comparators for head geometry verification, 2.5D image measuring systems, Rockwell hardness testers, spectrometers for material verification, salt spray chambers for corrosion testing (when required), and XRF thickness gauges for plating verification. All equipment is calibrated annually.

We trace everything – Every coil of steel wire comes with a mill test certificate and heat number. We can trace every batch back to the original melt. If a field issue ever occurs, we can pull the full file.

We deliver what we promise – Samples in 5–7 days. Production on schedule. Full documentation with every shipment.

We work with manufacturers in agricultural equipment, heavy machinery, automotive, railway, construction, mining equipment, and truck and trailer manufacturing – across North America, Europe, and Asia.

H2: Two Questions We Answer Often

Q: “Are steel round head rivets strong enough for structural applications – and what is the shear strength?”

A: Yes – steel round head rivets are widely used in structural applications. A solid 5mm steel round head rivet has a single shear strength of approximately 11,000–13,000 N. A solid 6mm rivet delivers approximately 16,000–19,000 N. Semi‑tubular round head rivets retain 80–90% of these values. For reference, these numbers meet or exceed the requirements for most agricultural equipment, heavy machinery, and truck chassis applications. If your application requires specific shear or tensile values, send us your requirements – we will confirm the right size and design for your load conditions.

Q: “What is the typical lead time for custom steel round head rivets – and what information do you need to quote?”

A: For custom steel round head rivets, the lead time depends on whether new tooling is required. If your shank diameter and head dimensions are within our standard tooling range, sample lead time is 5–7 days and production lead time is 10–15 days after sample approval. If we need to design and cut new heading dies, tooling fabrication takes 15–20 days, followed by sample production. The total lead time from drawing submission to sample delivery is typically 20–25 days for custom tooling.

To provide a quote, we need: shank diameter, overall length (or material stack thickness), head diameter (or your assembly requirements), material grade, finish, and estimated annual quantity. A drawing or sample of your current rivet is helpful. We will respond within 24 hours with tooling cost (if any), piece price, and lead time.
