The universal head is the fastener equivalent of a Swiss Army knife – it does almost everything well. If a round head is too narrow and a truss head is too wide, the universal head head solid rivet is the answer. It offers a head diameter 2.0–2.2 times the shank – wider than round (1.6–1.8×), narrower than truss (2.2–2.8×) – with a smooth, radiused profile that looks good on any surface.


When you are not sure which head style to choose, the universal head is the safe bet. It works in almost every application, in almost every material, and looks professional doing it.

When to choose universal head: You are assembling mixed materials (metal + plastic, metal + wood, metal + composites). You want a balance of bearing area and profile. You are not sure which head style to choose – universal is the safe default.


One Real Application – Residential Gate Hinge

A hardware manufacturer was producing a line of residential gate hinges and latches. The gate components were powder‑coated steel with plastic bearing inserts. The existing round head rivets were too narrow – the heads were pulling through the powder‑coated steel after repeated use. Truss head rivets were too wide – they looked bulky and industrial on a residential product.

Length rule for solid rivets: Overall length = material stack thickness + (1.2–1.5 × shank diameter).

Our Production Process – From Raw Material to Finished Rivet


1. Raw Material Procurement – Certified wire from approved mills. Each coil comes with a mill test certificate and heat number.


2. Incoming Material Inspection – Diameter, hardness, and material composition verified before production. Coils outside specification are rejected.


3. Tooling Preparation – For new dimensions, carbide heading dies are designed and machined. For standard sizes, existing tooling is inspected and set up.


4. First Article Inspection – The first 10 rivets are measured on an optical comparator. Every dimension must match the drawing before production starts.


5. Mass Production – In‑process checks occur at defined intervals (5 rivets every 500 pieces). Any dimensional drift triggers immediate press stop.


6. In‑Process Inspection – Every 2,000 pieces, we set 3 rivets into a sample of your actual material. Clinch inspected for symmetry and tightness.


7. Final Outgoing Inspection – 100% optical sorting for critical dimensions. AQL sample manually verified. Dimensional report, material certificate, and Certificate of Conformance issued with every shipment.

A: Yes, with the right material and finish. For outdoor applications, we recommend stainless steel (SUS304) with passivated finish for permanent corrosion resistance – 200–500 hours salt spray. For general outdoor use where budget is a concern, zinc‑plated carbon steel with yellow chromate provides 96 hours of salt spray resistance. In the gate hardware case, the customer chose zinc‑plated steel because the gates were sheltered (under a porch) and the cost savings were significant.
