Product Description

Round head solid rivets are the fastener that needs no introduction. You have seen them on bridges, on jeans, on machinery, on luggage. The round head is the most recognized rivet head in the world – and for good reason. It distributes load evenly, resists impact, does not snag, and looks finished.

When you need the classic appearance of a round head plus the maximum strength of a solid rivet, this is the fastener you specify. Available in five material families and diameters from 0.8mm to 8.0mm, we can match your application requirements exactly.

Why Round – And Why Solid

Round is not just a shape. It is a design that has been proven over centuries.

  • Load distribution – The dome spreads force evenly across the head
  • Impact resistance – No sharp corners to catch or deform
  • Self-centering – The round shape helps align the rivet during insertion
  • Visual consistency – A uniform dome that looks professional and intentional

Solid is the strongest rivet construction. Unlike semi‑tubular rivets that rely on thin walls rolling outward, solid rivets use the full shank diameter to form the clinch. This delivers maximum shear and tensile strength.

Feature Round Head Solid Rivet Round Head Semi‑Tubular Rivet
Strength 100% (maximum) 80–90% of solid
Setting force 4–6 tons (for 5mm) 25–30% of solid
Clinch type Full shank deformation Hollow wall rolling

Five Materials – Choose What Fits Your Assembly

Material Key Advantage Best For Common Finishes
Low‑carbon steel Strongest, most cost‑effective Structural assemblies, heavy equipment, automotive Zinc‑plated, black oxide, plain
Stainless steel (304/316) Permanent corrosion resistance Marine, food equipment, outdoor infrastructure Passivated (standard)
Brass (C2680) Conductivity, non‑magnetic, decorative Electrical, switchgear, architectural hardware Lacquered, nickel‑plated, antique
Copper Highest electrical/thermal conductivity High‑current connections, heat transfer applications Plain, tin‑plated
Aluminum (5052/5056) Lightest, non‑magnetic Aerospace, drones, portable equipment Anodized, plain

One Application – Outdoor Furniture Frame Assembly

A manufacturer of premium outdoor furniture was using semi‑tubular rivets to assemble chair and table frames. After two seasons of outdoor exposure, the rivets began to loosen – the hollow walls could not maintain clamping force under continuous expansion and contraction from temperature changes. The customer needed a fastener that would hold permanently and maintain its appearance.

Nuote Metals supplied 304 stainless steel round head solid rivets – 5.0mm shank, 9.0mm round head, 16.0mm overall length, passivated finish. The solid construction delivered permanent clamping force that would not loosen over time. The 304 stainless provided corrosion resistance against rain and humidity. The round head delivered the classic, clean appearance the customer wanted for their premium furniture line.

The customer tested the rivets across 500 chairs and tables. After two years of outdoor exposure and continuous use, zero loosening, zero rust. The customer has since used over 400,000 rivets across their entire outdoor furniture line.

Custom Dimensions – Built to Your Specifications

We manufacture round head solid rivets to your exact specifications. Shank diameters from 0.8mm to 8.0mm are available, with overall lengths customised to your material stack thickness.

What we need from you:

  • Shank diameter – from 0.8mm to 8.0mm
  • Overall length – or your total material stack thickness
  • Material – steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, or aluminum
  • Head style – round, flat, oval, or countersunk
  • Finish – zinc, passivated, lacquered, anodized, or plain

Standard sizes in stock – no tooling charge for existing specifications. Custom head diameters and special geometries may require tooling; we will advise at quotation stage.

Manufacturing Process – From Raw Material to Finished Rivet

Round head solid rivets require precision cold heading to achieve the classic dome shape consistently. Our process ensures the same dome, every time.

Our seven‑step production workflow:

  • Material Sourcing – Certified wire from approved mills; each coil heat‑numbered for full traceability
  • Material Inspection – Spectrometer verifies composition; laser micrometer checks diameter (±0.02mm); hardness tested; out‑of‑spec coils rejected
  • Tooling Customization / Setup – New dimensions: carbide heading dies designed and machined (15–25 days). Standard sizes: existing tooling installed and aligned
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) – 10–20 rivets produced; measured on optical comparator; head diameter, head height, shank diameter, overall length must match drawing; customer receives FAI report
  • Mass Production – Press runs at optimized speed; in‑process checks: 5 rivets every 500 pieces; any drift beyond ±0.05mm stops the press
  • Subcontracted Plating (if required) – Zinc, nickel, passivation, or other finishes applied by certified partners; plating thickness verified by XRF
  • Final Outgoing Inspection – 100% optical sorting for critical dimensions; AQL sample (Level II, 1.0) manually verified; Certificate of Conformance issued

Quality Control – What We Check and Why:

What Tolerance Why It Matters
Shank diameter ±0.05mm Must fit your hole precisely
Head diameter ±0.15mm Determines bearing surface
Head height ±0.15mm Must match design specification
Overall length ±0.15mm Must match your material stack
Head concentricity ±0.10mm Ensures even load distribution
Surface finish Verified by XRF Plating thickness meets specification

Three Questions We Answer Often

Q1: What is the difference between a round head solid rivet and a round head semi‑tubular rivet?

A: The difference is the tail design. A round head solid rivet is fully solid – the entire shank deforms during installation, providing maximum shear and tensile strength. A round head semi‑tubular rivet has a hollow cavity at the tail, reducing setting force by 70% but offering 80–90% of solid strength. Choose solid for structural, load‑bearing, and permanent assemblies where maximum strength is required. Choose semi‑tubular for high‑volume production where installation speed is critical and loads are moderate. For the outdoor furniture case above, solid was the right choice because the customer needed permanent clamping force under thermal expansion.

Q2: What materials are available for round head solid rivets?

A: We manufacture rivets in five material families:

  • Low‑carbon steel – Strongest, most cost‑effective, zinc or nickel plated
  • Stainless steel (304/316) – Permanent corrosion resistance, passivated as standard
  • Brass (C2680) – Conductivity, non‑magnetic, decorative
  • Copper – Highest electrical/thermal conductivity
  • Aluminum (5052/5056) – Lightest, non‑magnetic

How do I select the correct overall length for a round head solid rivet?

A: Select a length that will leave 1.2–1.5 times the shank diameter protruding past your material stack after insertion. For example, if you are joining two 2mm sheets (total 4mm) with a 5mm shank, you need 1.2 × 5mm = 6mm of shank protruding. Total length = 4mm (stack) + 6mm (protrusion) = 10mm. This protruding material forms the second head during setting. Send us your material stack thickness, and we will recommend the exact length.
