Steel Pipe Rivets

Steel Pipe Rivets

Nuote Metals supplies steel pipe rivets – hollow fasteners made from genuine steel tube stock, cut to length with a head formed on one end. Also commonly called steel hollow rivets. The most cost‑effective option in the pipe rivet family, delivering the same uniform wall thickness and consistent inside diameter as brass or copper at a significantly lower cost.

Product Description

Steel pipe rivets – also commonly called steel hollow rivets – are hollow fasteners made from actual steel tube stock. Same product. Two names. We make the same reliable fastener regardless of what you call it.

If you need a hollow fastener with uniform wall thickness and a consistent inside bore – but you are working with a tight budget – they are the answer. They offer the same structural integrity as brass or copper pipe rivets at a fraction of the cost. When the application does not require conductivity or premium appearance, steel pipe rivets deliver reliable performance without the premium price tag.

Steel Pipe Rivet vs. Semi‑Tubular vs. Solid – Where It Fits

Feature Steel Pipe Rivet (Hollow) Steel Semi‑Tubular Rivet Steel Solid Rivet
Shaft design Fully hollow (tube stock) Partially hollow (45–55% of length) Fully solid
Setting force 15–20% of solid 25–30% of solid 100%
Wall thickness Thin, uniform Moderate, uniform Solid
Through‑hole Open all the way through Blocked at bottom No passage
Cost Lowest Low Medium
Best for Budget‑sensitive, soft materials, lightweight assemblies General purpose, moderate loads Structural, maximum strength

Materials & Finishes

We manufacture steel pipe rivets from low‑carbon steel tube stock, offering the highest strength‑to‑cost ratio of any hollow rivet.

Available finishes:

Finish Appearance Corrosion Protection Best For
Plain (uncoated) Raw steel None Indoor, dry environments
Zinc‑plated (clear) Silver 48 hrs salt spray Indoor general use, cost‑effective
Zinc‑plated (yellow) Gold tint 96 hrs salt spray Sheltered outdoor, industrial
Nickel‑plated Bright silver 96 hrs salt spray Consumer products, visible hardware
Black oxide Matte black 24 hrs salt spray Anti‑glare, industrial, automotive
Tin‑plated Matte silver Good Solderability, corrosion resistance

One Real Application – Heavy‑Duty Belt Hole Reinforcement

A manufacturer of heavy‑duty work belts needed a fastener to reinforce buckle holes. The belts were subjected to constant tension and repeated flexing – the previous plastic eyelets cracked over time. Solid rivets were too heavy and required high setting force that damaged the thick leather. The customer needed a hollow fastener that would reinforce the holes without adding bulk, and they needed it at a cost that made sense for high‑volume production.

We supplied zinc‑plated steel pipe rivets – 5.0mm shank, 9.0mm round head, 6.0mm barrel length, clear zinc finish. They provided uniform wall thickness and a clean, consistent bore. The hollow design flared with minimal force – no damage to the leather. The zinc plating offered corrosion resistance. The steel material kept the cost low for high‑volume production. The customer tested 1,000 rivets across 500 belts. After 10,000 pull cycles, zero failures. They now order our pipe rivets in batches of 300,000 pieces annually.

From Steel Tube to Finished Pipe Rivet – Quality Built In, Not Added On

Unlike solid or semi‑tubular rivets that start as wire, steel pipe rivets begin as genuine tube stock. That difference affects everything – from how they are made to how we check them.

Our production sequence:

Tube cutting – Steel tube is cut to precise blank length. ±0.02mm tolerance.

Heading – A carbide die forms the head (round, flat, or countersunk) on one end.

Trimming & tumbling – Flash is removed, micro‑burrs eliminated.

Plating or coating – Applied as specified.

That is the production side. But what sets us apart is what we do around the production:

Before we cut – Incoming tube stock is verified for outside diameter, wall thickness, and material composition. No out‑of‑spec material enters the cutting room.

After we head – The first 10 rivets from each tooling setup are measured on an optical comparator. Inner diameter, outer flange, barrel length, wall thickness – all verified before the press runs at speed.

During the run – Operators pull 5 rivets every 500 pieces. Any drift beyond tolerance stops the press.

Before we ship – Every 2,000 pieces, we set 3 rivets into a sample of your actual material. We check the clinch for symmetry and tightness, and confirm the bore remains open. Every rivet then passes through optical sorting. Rejects are ejected automatically. A random AQL sample is manually verified.

We keep records for five years. If a field issue ever occurs, we can trace the batch and pull the full file.

Sample lead time: 5–7 days standard; custom tooling: 15–20 days.

What Our Customers Say – Real Feedback

We let our customers speak for us. The images above show real feedback from manufacturers who have used our steel pipe rivets in their production lines – from industrial equipment builders to furniture makers to budget‑conscious consumer goods manufacturers.

They come back to us for the same reasons:

Lowest cost – The most economical hollow rivet option available

Uniform quality – Consistent wall thickness and inside diameter, batch after batch

Reliable delivery – Samples ship in 5–7 days, production on schedule

Three Questions We Answer Often

Q: "Are steel pipe rivets and steel hollow rivets the same thing?"

A: Yes – they are the same product. Some customers call them steel pipe rivets, others call them steel hollow rivets. Different names, same reliable fastener. We manufacture the same product under both names so you can find us regardless of which term you use. Both refer to a hollow fastener made from genuine steel tube stock, cut to length with a head formed on one end.

Q: "Can I get samples before ordering production quantities?"

A: Yes – we offer samples for all our products. For standard existing specifications, samples are provided free of charge – you only pay the shipping cost. For custom sizes or custom tooling, sample availability and lead time depend on the specific requirements. Please contact our sales team with your drawing or specification, and they will advise on sample cost and delivery timeline.

Q: "Will steel pipe rivets rust? How do I protect them?"

A: Uncoated steel will rust. We offer several finishes: zinc plating (clear or yellow) provides 48–96 hours of salt spray resistance for general industrial use; nickel plating provides 96 hours with a bright, decorative finish; black oxide offers mild corrosion protection with a matte, anti‑glare appearance. For the belt case above, zinc plating provided sufficient protection. For continuous outdoor or coastal exposure, we recommend switching to stainless steel pipe rivets.
