Product Description

Among all rivet head styles, the round head remains the most recognizable and mechanically robust. Round head semi hollow rivets combine the traditional domed profile—proven over centuries of mechanical assembly—with the modern efficiency of a hollow-end design. This hybrid delivers the shear strength of a solid rivet while requiring significantly less setting force.

Nuote Metals cold-heads round head semi hollow rivets in low-carbon steel, stainless steel (304/316), brass, and aluminum. The semi-hollow cavity reduces setting force by approximately 70% compared to a solid rivet, making them ideal for automated assembly and applications where substrate damage is a concern. Our components serve industries where a visible, uniform dome is both functional and aesthetic—including furniture, luggage, automotive interiors, heavy equipment, and leather goods.

Technical Specifications – What Defines a Round Head Rivet

Head Geometry – Round vs. Other Styles

Head Style Head Dia / Shank Head Height Profile Best For
Round 1.6 – 1.8 : 1 Tall (40–50% of head dia) Continuous dome, smooth curvature High shear, metal-to-metal, visible assemblies
Pan 1.8 – 2.2 : 1 Medium (35–40%) Dome with short straight wall General assembly, visible but not bulky
Flat 2.0 – 2.5 : 1 Low (25–30%) Flat top Clearance-limited, low profile

The round head’s continuous dome provides maximum head strength and resists deformation under impact. Its self-centering shape helps align the rivet during insertion, and the visible dome offers a classic, finished appearance.

Mechanical Data (5mm Steel Round Head, Set into 2mm Steel Sheet)

Property Value
Single shear strength 11,000 – 13,000 N
Recommended hole size Shank + 0.15 – 0.20 mm
Setting force 1.2 – 2.0 tons

Semi-tubular rivets typically retain 80–90% of the shear strength of a solid rivet while requiring significantly less installation force. The hollow tail helps control deformation, leading to stable clinch formation.

One Real Customer Example – Kitchen Cabinet Hinge

This is one of many applications for round head semi hollow rivets. We include it to show real production use, not to suggest limitation.

A kitchen cabinet hardware manufacturer produced hundreds of thousands of concealed hinges annually. The hinge pivot used a solid steel rivet, but the high setting force was causing stress fractures in the zinc die-cast hinge housing. Reject rates were running at 3–4%, and the customer needed a solution that would eliminate cracking without redesigning the hinge.

Nuote Metals supplied round head semi hollow rivets – 4mm shank, 7mm round head, 8mm barrel length, zinc plated. The semi-hollow cavity reduced setting force from 3.5 tons to 1.2 tons, eliminating stress fractures entirely. The round head provided a consistent dome that matched the hinge’s aesthetic requirements. The customer tested 2,000 rivets across 1,000 hinges. Zero cracks. Zero loose joints.

The customer initially ordered 10,000 pieces as a trial. After successful validation, they placed a production order for 300,000 pieces. Annual orders now range from 300,000 to 500,000 pieces. The hinge line operates at 1,800 units per hour with zero rivet-related stoppages.

Our Quality Control Process – From Raw Material to Your Production Line

We do not rely on random sampling alone. Every batch of round head semi hollow rivets follows a layered inspection system that catches issues before they become problems.

Incoming material stage

  • Each coil of wire is checked for diameter (laser micrometer, ±0.02mm) and hardness (Rockwell tester). We reject any coil that deviates from the specified range for that grade.

Setup and first-off stage

  • When tooling is installed, the first 10 rivets are examined under 20× magnification for surface defects, and then measured on an optical comparator. Head diameter, head height, shank, length, and cavity depth must match the drawing before production begins.

During production stage

  • Operators pull 5 rivets every 500 pieces. They check critical dimensions with digital calipers and a go/no‑go gauge for cavity depth. Any drift beyond tolerance triggers an immediate press stop and tool adjustment.

Clinch verification stage

  • Every 2,000 pieces, we set 3 rivets into a sample of your actual material (same thickness and composition). The rolled clinch is inspected for symmetry, tightness, and crack‑free formation.

Corrosion testing (if applicable)

  • For plated steel or stainless rivets, samples are placed in our salt spray chamber per ASTM B117. We issue a certificate with the exact hours achieved.

Final sorting stage

  • Every single rivet passes through an optical sorting machine with high‑speed cameras. It rejects parts with incorrect head diameter, head height, shank, or cavity depth. After sorting, a random AQL sample (Level II, 1.0) is manually verified with profile projector and micrometers.

All inspection records—including measurement logs, test setting photos, and salt spray reports—are retained for five years and are included with every shipment.

Real Customer Feedback

Three Questions We Answer Often

Q1: What is the difference between a round head semi hollow rivet and a solid round head rivet? When should I choose the semi-hollow version?

A: The fundamental difference is the hollow cavity in the tail. A round head semi hollow rivet has a shallow cavity at the tip, requiring only 25–30% of the force needed for a solid rivet of the same diameter. Solid round head rivets are fully solid and require heavy squeezing or hammering with a bucking bar. For applications where you have access to both sides and want a traditional dome appearance, semi-hollow rivets are almost always the better choice because they are faster to install, cause less stress on surrounding materials, and produce a more consistent clinch. Solid rivets are reserved for extreme structural loads where maximum shear strength is the only priority. For hinges, furniture, luggage, and automotive interior applications, we recommend round head semi hollow rivets for their combination of classic appearance and installation efficiency.

Q2: Can round head semi hollow rivets be used in plastic or thin sheet metal without causing cracks?

A: Yes. The semi-hollow cavity reduces setting force significantly—typically from 3–4 tons down to 1–2 tons. This lower force is much gentler on brittle materials like ABS, polycarbonate, and thin aluminum. For the kitchen hinge case above, the customer’s solid rivet was cracking the zinc housing at 3.5 tons; our semi-hollow rivet set cleanly at 1.2 tons. We recommend selecting a barrel length 1.5–2.0mm longer than your material stack, and using a press (not a hammer) for consistent, controlled force. For very thin or fragile materials, we can also supply a backing washer to distribute the clinching load further.

Q3: What finishes do you offer for round head semi hollow rivets, and which is best for outdoor use?

A: We offer several finishes depending on the material. For steel: zinc plating (clear, blue, or yellow – 48–96 hours salt spray), black oxide (mild corrosion resistance, matte appearance), and phosphate (paint base). For stainless steel: passivation (standard, restores corrosion resistance) and bead blasting (matte finish). For brass: natural lacquered (bright gold), antique (dark, aged), and nickel-plated (silver). For outdoor use, we recommend 304 stainless with passivation for general outdoor exposure, or 316 stainless for coastal/marine environments. Our 316 rivets have passed 1,000+ hours of salt spray testing. Zinc-plated steel is suitable for indoor or sheltered outdoor use but will eventually rust in wet conditions.
